Shoppers at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Lidl and more risking £100 parking fines
Drivers can be fined for breaching supermarket parking rules, with charges often around £100 even when spaces appear empty.
Supermarket car parks are often managed by private operators that issue Parking Charge Notices when they believe conditions such as stay limits or bay restrictions have been broken.
A private Parking Charge Notice differs from penalties issued by local authorities, with some operators using automatic number plate recognition cameras to send notices by post.
Graham Conway, managing director of Select Car Leasing, urges drivers to check signage, noting, "Not all store car parks punish after-hours parking, but many do, and it's an issue that's causing real confusion among motorists."
Citizens Advice and the Consumer Council offer guidance on challenging incorrect notices, with appeal processes varying across Scotland, England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
Drivers should contact the operator or landowner, such as the supermarket, and provide evidence like photographs of unclear signs if they believe a notice was issued incorrectly.
