Shopify Stock Falls as Q3 Revenue Misses some Analysts’ Expectations
The e-commerce company topped profit estimates, but investors focused on slower growth in gross merchandise volume and subscription revenue.
On November 3, Shopify reported third-quarter revenue of $3.74 billion, up 32% year over year and meeting consensus estimates as the e-commerce company accelerated its embrace of agentic shopping tools.
Despite the revenue beat, two closely watched growth metrics fell short of analyst expectations. Gross merchandise volume reached $119.15 billion, up 29% annually, while Subscription Solutions revenue rose 20% to $836 million.
Operating income exceeded projections at $568 million, and free cash flow surged to $816 million, raising the margin to 22% from 18% a year earlier. CFO Jeff Hoffmeister attributed the strength to "multiple growth drivers."
Following the growth metric misses, Shopify stock fell 15% in trading, while rivals Amazon and MercadoLibre edged higher and Wix and Etsy saw significantly smaller declines, concentrating the sell-off in Shopify.
For the holiday quarter, Shopify projects revenue growth in the low-thirties percentage range while continuing to build agentic commerce features where chatbot interfaces function as "storefronts" for customer purchases.
