Shomari Figures wins Alabama's 2nd Congressional District race
Figures secured a second term after a court-drawn map helped him flip the seat in 2024 and the district was redrawn again.
On Tuesday, Democrat Rep. Shomari Figures won reelection to the House representing Alabama's 2nd Congressional District, defeating Republican Rhett Marques.
Alabama held a special session earlier this year to set election dates with a more Republican-friendly Congressional District map, replacing a previous court-drawn configuration.
Figures, an attorney and former Obama administration staffer, secured the seat despite boundary changes, leading with 54% of the vote with 91% counted as of Tuesday.
Marques, a longtime auto service business owner, campaigned to flip the seat back to Republicans as the district was reconfigured after the previous map had favored Democrats.
Nationally, Republicans cling to a slim majority in the House with 218 seats, while Democrats seek to take control with 214 seats as voters determine the balance of Congress.
