After Reversal of Minneapolis DFL Endorsements, Candidates Look Ahead to November
The Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party invalidated Omar Fateh's endorsement due to a flawed electronic voting system causing substantial undercount and candidate elimination, officials said.
- On Friday, the Minnesota DFL vacated its Minneapolis mayoral endorsement after finding substantial failures in the convention's voting process, following incumbent Mayor Jacob Frey's request and praising the evidence-based review.
- After complaints and delayed tabulation, investigators concluded the electronic voting system used by the Minneapolis DFL at the July 19 convention at Target Center produced a highly inaccurate tabulation with an undercount of 176 votes.
- Official tallies indicated Omar Fateh had 43.8% and Jacob Frey 31.5% of the 577 counted votes, while the state review found Rev. Dr. DeWayne Davis was improperly dropped despite meeting the 20-percent threshold.
- Moving forward, the party decided there will be no DFL-endorsed mayoral candidate and all mayoral candidates will receive equal access to the Minnesota DFL voter database, leveling the playing field for the Nov. 4th race.
- Party officials warned the move deepens divides between progressive Minneapolis activists and moderate DFL establishment, while donor pressure surfaced as Lisa Goodman held checks worth nearly $25,000 t tied to Fateh's endorsement overturn.
