LaPorte County Deputy Shot at Michigan City Hospital Undergoes "Successful" Surgery
Samuelson underwent about 8 hours of surgery and remains in critical but stable condition after a man he transported opened fire, police said.
On Friday, LaPorte County Sheriff's Deputy Jon Samuelson was shot three times inside the emergency room at Franciscan Health Michigan City after confronting a man he had previously transported to the facility.
Earlier that morning, Deputy Samuelson stopped to assist a motorist near Westville, believing the driver was stranded; however, he later learned the man was a suspect in an earlier criminal incident.
Sharod Grafton Jr., 22, of Chicago, faces felony charges including attempted murder, while Samuelson remains in critical but stable condition at Memorial Hospital following an eight-hour surgery.
Following the shooting, Grafton fled into nearby woods where officers apprehended him; Sheriff Ron Heeg expressed gratitude to medical staff for the "exceptional care being provided to Deputy Samuelson."
Authorities continue investigating the incident as the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office and the South Central Community School Corporation rally in support of the veteran officer, his family, and friends.
