Shelton beats Fritz 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in Stuttgart for first title on grass
Shelton saved nine of 11 break points and beat Fritz in three sets for his sixth career title and third of the season, officials said.
On Sunday, American Ben Shelton defeated defending champion Taylor Fritz 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in an all-American final to win the Stuttgart Open in Germany.
The 23-year-old Shelton saved nine of the 11 break points he faced, demonstrating the defensive resilience required to overcome Fritz and secure the championship.
This Stuttgart victory marks Shelton's third title of the season, following earlier wins in Munich and Dallas in April and February respectively.
Shelton also defeated Fritz in the Dallas decider earlier this year and reached the Stuttgart final after saving two match points against Jiri Lehecka in the semifinal.
The Stuttgart title represents Shelton's first career grass-court championship, positioning him with momentum heading into the grass-court season's remaining tournaments.
