Sharp increase of refugee returns pose risk to Afghanistan's fragile stability: UNHCR
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Saturday raised the alarm over a surge in the number of Afghans returning from Iran under harsh conditions, cautioning that large-scale returns could exacerbate Afghanistan's already fragile situation.
The largest checkpoint on the Afghan-Iranian border is Islam-Kala, which has thousands of Afghans who are forced to leave their homeland before being deported. "I was born in Iran, I lived there for 27 years, but we Afghans have no respect. They're creating conditions for you to leave," says one of them.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has warned this Friday of an increase in the “needs” for more than 1.4 million Afghans who have been returned to their country so far this year, as cases skyrocket in the face of Afghanistan's inability to assume this return.
