A man has submitted an application for a war hero to be recognised with a blue plaque in Wimbledon.
Alex Lawrence wants it placed on Victoria Cross recipient Arthur Scarf’s former home in Dunmore Road where he was born in 1913. Scarf was awarded the most prestigious decoration for his role as a Royal Air Force pilot in The Pacific War. Alex spoke with Jackie News about Scarf’s life, and the application process with English Heritage. English Heritage says it cannot confirm the news.
Sheffield’s pioneering ‘Lady with the Lamp’ has been given a blue plaque.
Monica Maurice, who was known as the ‘Lady with the Lamp’, has been awarded a blue plaque to celebrate her contribution to safety in engineering. The event took place on the 8th May, at the Wolf Safety Lamp company house on Saxon Road. Maurice was a pioneer in safety for miners by designing and manufacturing flame-safety lamps that received international praise.
