Shark heads dumped outside fisheries minister’s office
Three men from Bunbury were charged with littering and trespass after dumping 200kg of shark heads in protest of new fishing bans impacting local fisheries.
- On Monday, three men aged 37, 36 and 34 were arrested and charged with littering after allegedly dumping about 200kg of shark heads outside Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis's Margaret River office about 6.55am.
- The WA government introduced an about 880km recreational zone from December 16 and a demersal commercial fishing ban taking effect on New Year's Day, industry figures said blindsided them.
- Investigators say the protest included clothes with a message and led to additional charges beyond littering and trespass, with firearms seized from the younger man's home and two men charged with cannabis and firearm offences.
- The men are scheduled to appear at Bunbury Magistrates Court on January 22 as the case proceeds, while a spokesman for Fisheries Minister Jackie Jarvis confirmed the state government $29m support package followed consultation.
- Tourism and fishing-dependent towns now face severe disruption as the bans bite into local economies, Fish For All met officials on Monday, and Shane Love, Nationals leader, organised a fishing forum later this month, while Tourism Minister Reece Whitby defended the ban.
