San Francisco, Port of Oakland Settle Airport Trademark Lawsuit

On Tuesday, San Francisco and Oakland settled a two-year legal battle, allowing the airport to be called "Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport" under strict branding restrictions.
The conflict began in 2024 when Oakland renamed its airport to boost traffic, prompting San Francisco officials to sue over alleged trademark violations and traveler confusion concerns.
San Francisco International Airport Director Mike Nakornkhet said the agreement provides "clarity" for travelers, while Mary Richardson stated the Port "preserved the right to retain our airport's full name."
Neither side admitted liability in the settlement, which bars Oakland from emphasizing "San Francisco," requires "Bay" after the city name, and prohibits "SF" or "International."
Following Oakland's appeal to the Ninth Circuit Court, the settlement concludes the legal dispute, while the airport's three-letter code OAK remains unchanged.
