Multiple Deaths Reported as Van Catches Fire on Murree Expressway
Authorities said the van lost control on a bend, burst into flames and trapped passengers, prompting an inquiry into the cause.
On Wednesday, at least 10 people were killed and 13 injured when a passenger van traveling from Multan to Murree plunged into a ravine near Khajut on the Rawalpindi Murree Expressway and burst into flames.
According to Motorway Police spokesperson Saqib Waheed, the van lost control while negotiating a bend and fell into a drainage channel beside the roadway. The vehicle landed on its side, preventing doors from opening.
Emergency responders including Motorway Police and Murree administration officials rushed to the scene for rescue operations. "The bodies of those killed and the injured survivors were transported to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad," Waheed said.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed sorrow over the loss of lives and ordered an official inquiry into the incident. She directed authorities to provide assistance to affected families and submit a comprehensive report.
A heavy contingent of officers remains at the scene while an investigation into the cause of the accident continues. Authorities are working to determine the exact circumstances that led to the crash.
