Seventh child dies from flu in Massachusetts

Massachusetts reports 260 flu deaths this season, including seven adults and a seventh child, with hospitalizations decreasing after a mid-December peak, officials said.

  • During the week of Feb. 1 to 7, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported a seventh child and seven adults died from influenza, bringing total flu deaths this season to 260.
  • After a late-December peak with 8,862 positive tests during Dec. 21 to 27, Massachusetts has seen declines in lab-confirmed cases, doctor's visits, and hospitalizations since.
  • Earlier this season, five children died in late December and early January, with a sixth in mid-January, according to the DPH dashboard.
  • Health officials say flu activity remains moderate while urging residents aged 6 months and older to vaccinate and follow hand-washing, social distancing, and mask use, with Dr. Robbie Goldstein calling it `a moment for clarity, urgency, and action,`.
  • Nationally, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports at least 23 million U.S. flu cases this season, with 300,000 hospitalizations, 19,000 deaths, and 66 pediatric deaths; about 90% of those children were unvaccinated.
