Serial rail fare evader fined £3,600 over 112 unpaid tickets
On Wednesday at Westminster Magistrates' Court, Charles Brohiri, 29, was sentenced to three months in jail suspended for a year and ordered to repay £3,629.60 for 112 unpaid journeys.
Facing years of homelessness, the defence and pre‑sentence report said inconsistent charity support, mental health issues, and lack of sustained services contributed to his offending, Eleanor Curzon said.
Over 112 journeys across nearly two years reveal Brohiri pleaded guilty to 76 charges, was convicted of 36 more, breached the Thameslink stations ban, and faced 16 offences up to February 10.
The court imposed 150 hours of unpaid work, a 12-month prohibition on GTR trains, and a rehabilitation activity requirement, warning further breaches could lead to custody; he will return on March 29 for a means inquiry.
Fare evasion is estimated to cost the railway £400 million a year, GTR said, with stepped‑up enforcement cutting ticketless travel to its lowest level since 2022 despite £31,742 in outstanding orders.
