Serbia's President Vucic resigns ahead of October parliamentary elections
The move follows more than a year of student-led anti-corruption protests and could let Vučić return as prime minister if his party wins.
On Sunday, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić resigned, ending his second five-year term to lead the Serbian Progressive Party in the Oct. 25 parliamentary ballot and pursue the prime ministership.
The Serbian Constitution prohibits the President from seeking a third consecutive term, prompting Vučić to shift his focus toward the premiership, which formally holds greater executive authority in Serbia.
Following the resignation, outgoing Parliament speaker Ana Brnabić will serve as acting president until a new speaker is appointed after the Oct. 25 election to schedule a presidential vote.
Analysts observe a tight race as a student-backed election list polls close to Vučić's party amid persistent allegations of corruption and democratic backsliding under his administration.
Vučić claims foreign powers intend to "destroy the state" during the election, while Serbia's European Union membership bid remains stalled over persistent democratic concerns.
Ana Brnabic assumes the post of interim president after the resignation of Aleksandar Vucic to attend the legislatures of October 25. Analysts and opponents see the appointment as “propaganda”
