'Separation will not solve problems': Poilievre speaks in Alberta ahead of referendum
Poilievre said separation will not solve Alberta’s problems and urged voters to keep pressing Ottawa to unlock the province’s oil and gas industry.
On Tuesday, Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre visited Edmonton to urge Albertans to vote for remaining in Canada, with less than three weeks until the October 19 provincial referendum on separation.
Premier Danielle Smith's United Conservative Party government called the 10-question referendum, with the final question asking Albertans whether to remain in Canada or hold a second, binding vote on leaving.
Addressing supporters, Poilievre argued frustration stems from federal Liberal policies rather than Confederation itself, stating, "Our businesses and workers are frustrated that our oil and gas is left in the ground."
Earlier in the day, Poilievre attended a fundraiser for 'Conservatives for Canada,' led by Conservative MP Dane Lloyd, which advocates for Alberta to remain in the country.
Critics, citing polls showing majority support for Canada, have accused Smith of calling the vote to appease separatist hardliners, though Smith said she personally supports Alberta staying a part of Canada.
