‘Kinahan Lieutenant’ Awaits Sentencing over Feud-Connected Charges
McGovern admitted directing gang activity tied to the feud and faces a possible life sentence for charges linked to a murder and surveillance plot.
On Monday, the Special Criminal Court in Dublin sentenced Kinahan senior lieutenant Sean McGovern to 24 years in prison for directing a criminal organization during the Hutch-Kinahan feud.
Consecutive sentences totaling 24 years address McGovern's role in the 2016 murder of Noel Kirwan, a 62-year-old grandfather, which carries 14 years, and plotting against James Gately, a Hutch associate, which carries 10 years.
Regarded as a "soft target," Kirwan was selected for murder due to his ties to the Hutch; the court heard he had been photographed at a Hutch family funeral and was easy to kill.
In May, the court heard McGovern apologize for the hurt caused by his actions, in proceedings presided over by judges Patrick McGrath, Sarah Berkeley, and Fiona Lydon.
These sentences will be served consecutively, with time backdated to when McGovern was taken into custody in Dubai, marking the conclusion of his involvement in the sanctioned criminal organization.
