Senegal to Get Bonuses, Land for Africa Cup of Nations Win
President Faye awarded each player $130,000 and 1,500 m² of coastal land after Senegal's AFCON win amid national debt challenges, with bonuses also for sports officials.
- At a Dakar ceremony on Tuesday night, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye offered bonuses of more than $130,000 and coastal land to each Lions of Teranga player after Sunday's AFCON final.
- Amid a frozen €1.53 billion IMF programme, the IMF said debt hit 132% of GDP at the end of 2024, complicating Senegal's financing.
- The package includes 1,500 square-metre coastal plots and payments of 75 million CFA francs per player, totaling 2.1 billion CFA francs for the 28 players.
- Earlier on Tuesday, the team rode atop a bus along Dakar's corniche toward the presidential palace in a victory parade after arriving in Dakar in the early hours of Monday.
- Following a dramatic final that ended 1-0 after extra-time, Senegal beat hosts Morocco despite their walk-off, and Patrice Motsepe, president of the Confederation of African Football, said winners receive €8.5m prize money.
