The bill passed 128-11 and now goes to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, with opponents warning it is tailored to one man.
- On Tuesday, Senegal's National Assembly approved electoral code amendments that could pave the way for Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko to contest the 2029 presidential election.
- Introduced by Sonko's PASTEF party, the bill passed with 128 votes in favor and 11 against, amending provisions that previously disqualified the Prime Minister from office.
- Opposition parties denounced the amendments as "personal" and "tailored to one man," while Pastef argued the previous code was "designed to eliminate candidates according to political interest."
- The bill now moves to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who must decide whether to sign it into law, as opposition parties may challenge the legislation at the Constitutional Council.
- Political differences have emerged between Faye and Sonko since the 2024 election, fueling debate over whether the Prime Minister will seek the presidency himself in 2029 after his prior exclusion.
