Florida Sen. Randy Fine defends ‘terrorist rag’ comment at committee meeting
- During a Committee for Governmental Oversight and Accountability meeting on Tuesday, State Senator Randy Fine referred to a keffiyeh, a Middle Eastern headdress worn by someone speaking in committee, as a 'terrorist rag'.
- Fine, who is Jewish, stated in an interview that anyone who wears a keffiyeh supports terrorism, associating the garment with Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization since 1997.
- Fine's opponent in the congressional race, Josh Weil, released a statement expressing frustration and upset at Fine's comment, while another individual, Lee, stated that Fine's comment furthers propaganda against the people of Palestine.
- In response to Weil's statement, Fine called his opponent Jihad Josh, maintaining his stance that he believes in Israel and the right of Jews to be safe.
- Around the same time, Senator Bill Cassidy announced an investigation into American Muslims for Palestine and their alleged ties to Hamas, as part of a broader examination of possible terrorist ties to anti-Israel protests on college campuses that began in October 2023, leading to over 100 civil rights investigations and actions such as Linda McMahon pulling $400 million in funding from Columbia University.
