Sen. Thom Tillis says he believes Trump’s fuel deal with Russia could be breaking the law
Tillis said Trump’s move could violate a 2022 ban on Russian oil imports, as Russia is set to send hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel.
- On Sunday, Sen. Thom Tillis told NBC News' Meet the Press that President Donald Trump's decision to ease sanctions on Russia for diesel fuel "may be breaking the law." The White House did not immediately comment.
- President Trump announced in a Friday post on Truth Social that Russia would "immediately supply" hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel fuel, with more than 1 million additional tons expected soon.
- Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Senate unanimously passed a bill in 2022 banning Russian oil imports, and Congress has not amended this legislation to reflect the president's recent announcement.
- Asked if the deal puts American lives at risk, Tillis said, "It absolutely will," pointing to Russian funding of mercenaries and the Kremlin's relationship with Iran. He added the president needs to understand this "is a problem."
- Separately, Tillis criticized Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, calling him a "failed leader" who "needs to get the hell out of the Department of Defense" regarding the planned Nidal Hasan execution livestream.
