Semicon India 2.0 Targets 200 Chip Design Startups, 1 Lakh Technicians, Ashwini Vaishnaw Says
The next phase expands beyond chip design to machines, materials and advanced packaging, with $5 billion in new investment and industry-academia research.
- On Thursday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Semicon India 2.0 targets at least 200 chip-design startups and companies at SEMICON India 2026, held from September 17 to 19 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi.
- Approved by the Union Cabinet in July with a Rs 1.275 lakh crore outlay, Semicon 2.0 builds on the first phase that approved 12 projects, with three already in commercial production.
- Vaishnaw also set a target of developing 1 lakh semiconductor technicians and factory-floor workers, while the event brings together more than 600 exhibitors and 300 international companies.
- Announced at the event, a USD 5 billion investment will help generate employment, and the program strengthens India's ATMP and OSAT ecosystem through a new 3D packaging unit in Odisha.
- Industry-Academia collaboration will drive the fifth pillar, focusing on applied research and development, as India moves toward building a broader integrated semiconductor ecosystem beyond individual manufacturing facilities.
