Woolworths Hit by Second Explosion, This Time in Bloemfontein
Police and explosives experts are investigating the cause after five packers were on duty and no injuries were reported, officials said.
On Thursday, May 28, and Friday, May 29, 2026, improvised explosive devices detonated at Woolworths stores in Menlyn Park, Pretoria, and Preller Square, Bloemfontein, triggering a nationwide security investigation.
The South African Police Service and The Hawks confirmed both incidents occurred between 01:00 and 03:00 while stores were closed, resulting in no injuries to staff or customers present.
Incoming Group CEO Sam Ngumeni described the incidents as "an attack not only on the business but on the values it represents," while confirming heightened security measures across all stores nationwide.
Warning American citizens to avoid Menlyn Park Shopping Centre, the United States Embassy and Consulates in South Africa issued a security advisory urging travelers to remain vigilant and monitor local media.
Although the Menlyn Park store has reopened, the Preller Square branch remains temporarily closed as authorities have not yet confirmed whether the two incidents are linked or suspects identified.
