Seattle officials introduce bill to help residents battle gun violence
The proposal would let Seattle’s transportation director close streets on police advice, giving residents an official option instead of unauthorized barricades.
Seattle City Council members are drafting a bill to authorize street closures for public safety, responding to residents who recently erected unauthorized barricades along Aurora Avenue North to deter gun violence.
Desperate to curb violence, neighbors installed steel planters to block vehicle access after gunfire struck a home near an infant's bedroom on May 16, prompting the barricade effort.
The Transportation Department removed the unauthorized planters Friday, replacing them with concrete traffic calming measures to ensure emergency vehicle access and trash collection.
Councilmember Debora Juarez and Mayor Katie Wilson are championing legislation allowing the police chief to recommend street closures for 30, 60, or 90 days as a deterrent.
The Council could take up the measure next month, though officials warn policies must prevent simply shifting criminal activity to other nearby streets.
