Hotel Workers in Seattle Threaten Strike Ahead of World Cup Crowds: 'We're Very Serious'
Workers say Hilton’s offer falls short as they seek higher pay, better healthcare and ICE protections before World Cup crowds arrive.
About 113 union workers at the Embassy Suites near Lumen Field will vote on Friday, June 5, to authorize a strike amid the FIFA World Cup, when more than 750,000 visitors are expected in Seattle.
The contract between Unite Here Local 8 and Hilton expired May 31, with the company offering less than $1 per year in raises over five years. Workers at a Seattle-area Hilton property secured more than double that last year.
Hayden Eyerly, a front desk employee, said workers seek better wages, healthcare, and ICE protections on the property. "We're all feeling overworked and understaffed," Eyerly added, citing need for fair workloads and reasonable staffing levels.
Union leadership warned that a walkout could begin at any time during the FIFA World Cup, potentially disrupting matches at Lumen Stadium where six games are scheduled to begin mid-June.
"We're very serious," Eyerly said, but the union hopes to avoid a walkout through good faith negotiations. Workers remain united to support each other if talks fail and a strike becomes necessary.
