Underwater Search Underway for Missing Boater at Heart Lake Conservation Area
Police say a woman survived and a man died after the canoe capsized, and investigators are treating the incident as suspicious.
Peel Regional Police are investigating a death after a canoe capsized on Saturday night at the closed Heart Lake Conservation Area in Brampton, prompting an overnight search-and-rescue operation.
Spokesperson Tyler Bell said emergency crews arrived around 9:30 p.m. Saturday and pulled a woman in her 30s from the water, but were unable to locate the man, also in his 30s, until an underwater recovery team found his body Sunday just after 1 p.m.
Neither boater wore life jackets in approximately 5 C water, and the conservation area was closed, meaning nobody should have been on the lake at the time.
Police are treating the incident as suspicious, with Bell stating, "Some things are just not completely lining up," as 22 Division conducts the probe.
A coroner's report expected Monday will determine the cause of death, while police investigate the relationship between the two and work to rule out foul play.
