Search ongoing for six people after debris found from missing Ontario air ambulance

Crews have searched 7,350 square kilometres and are working to recover the flight recorder as investigators probe the missing air ambulance.

  • On Saturday, a Gulfstream G100 jet operated by Hamilton-based Latitude Air Ambulance went missing while traveling from Bermuda to Boston with six people on board, prompting an active search.
  • The Federal Aviation Administration lost contact with the aircraft around 1:30 a.m. Saturday; United States Coast Guard crews later located a debris field confirmed to be from the jet off the coast of Nantucket, Mass.
  • Rear Admiral Matt Lake reported crews have searched about 7,350 square kilometres in a "large and demanding search area." The debris field lies 32 kilometres off Nantucket in waters approximately 24 to 28 metres deep.
  • "Our priority is to find the six personnel on that aircraft," said Lake. Search efforts involve fixed-wing aircraft, boats, and a helicopter, with next of kin being updated as operations continue.
  • Global Affairs Canada remains in contact with "relevant authorities" regarding the four Canadians as the next search phase focuses on locating the jet's black box, though the extensive debris field complicates recovery efforts.
