Officials deploy eight conservation officers to locate the grizzly that injured four during a school lunch break; bear attacks are rare but increasing in B.C., experts say.
- On Nov. 22, 2025, conservation officers are searching for a grizzly that attacked an elementary school group of about 20 students and staff in Bella Coola on Thursday, leaving three pupils and a teacher with major injuries.
- The B.C. Wildlife Federation says grizzly attacks have increased in recent years, blaming the 2017 grizzly hunt ban; BCCOS data since 2015 show 351 bears destroyed, 50 relocated, and around 190 hazed among 15,000 grizzlies in B.C.
- Eight conservation officers have been deployed by the B.C. Conservation Officer Service with traps and cameras set roughly 700 kilometres northwest of Vancouver, and officials urge people to stay away so the bear will act naturally.
- Teachers who fought off the bear with pepper spray and a bear banger were praised as heroes by Chief Samuel Schooner, Nuxalk Nation, and provincial leaders, while four people are in hospital and families request privacy.
- Officials are trying to determine the bear's behaviour and no euthanasia decision has been made; the B.C. government will listen to BCCOS advice as such attacks are extremely rare, Kevin Van Damme said.
