Students Set to Head Back to School as New Contract for Ontario Teachers Far Off
Ontario students are set to return to school soon, but new contracts for teachers and education workers are unlikely soon because bargaining has not started in earnest.
Current education contracts expire at the end of the month, yet negotiations have stalled due to disagreements over which issues should be negotiated centrally or locally.
Martha Hradowy, president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation, states the government wants to centralize talks by moving transfer, layoff, and recall issues away from local negotiations.
The dispute over central and local bargaining has been referred to the Ontario Labour Relations Board, causing a stall in negotiations.
