Poilievre Invites Iran’s Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi to Visit Canada
Poilievre said the invitation is a chance to discuss democracy and safety for the Iranian diaspora, and he did not say he endorsed Pahlavi.
On Saturday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre invited Prince Reza Pahlavi to visit Canada and confirmed plans for a virtual meeting to discuss democracy and safety for the Iranian diaspora.
Pahlavi, who resides in the Washington area, pitches himself as the best figure to oversee Iran's transition to democratic elections, though critics charge he has not built a viable governance platform during his years in exile.
Macdonald-Laurier Institute senior fellow Kaveh Shahrooz argued Pahlavi refuses to discuss federalism or language rights, writing that the "illiberal, thuggish behaviour of the movement he has cultivated contradicts his polished speeches."
Parliamentary secretary Rob Oliphant confirmed Canada does not support any specific opposition figure, rejecting a petition to recognize Pahlavi as the legitimate representative of the Iranian people.
Canada cut diplomatic ties with Iran in 2012, yet Iranian Canadians in the diaspora continue facing threats from regime agents while the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps maintains vast control over the state.
