Scotland 'not like Manchester', Swinney says in dig at PM Burnham
John Swinney says the SNP will launch its biggest independence campaign and bring Scotland’s bus network under public control by 2031.
At the SNP conference in Aberdeen, John Swinney vowed that "soon Scotland will be an independent nation," criticizing Prime Minister Andy Burnham by saying, "Some think we should just be like Manchester. Well I'm afraid I disagree."
Highlighting constitutional friction, Swinney cited a non-binding agreement signed last month with nationalist leaders in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland vowing no Westminster government has the right to "block democracy."
Scotland voted 55% to 45% against independence in 2014, providing historical context for the SNP's renewed push toward a second referendum by 2031.
The SNP leader announced a £30m fund to "combat the rise of the racists" and a £1m "respect fund" for schools, while pledging to bring the Bus network under public control by 2031 with a £2 fare cap.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham told Swinney a second referendum is "off limits," though the SNP hopes to hold a vote by 2031. Ending his speech, Swinney said "the stars are aligning" for independence supporters.
