School Shooting in Brazil's Acre State Leaves 2 Women Dead. A 13-Year-Old Student Was Detained
Police said the 13-year-old admitted the attack, and the gun belonged to his stepfather, who was also detained.
On Tuesday, a school shooting at Instituto Sao Jose in Rio Branco, Acre, left two women dead and two others injured. Authorities detained a 13-year-old student who admitted carrying out the attack.
Police said the suspect used a firearm owned by his stepfather, who was also detained. The weapon came from a legal guardian, according to authorities investigating the incident.
The two fatalities were female staff members who died at the scene, while another staff member and a student sustained injuries. Officials did not disclose the victims' identities.
Acre Gov. Mailza Assis expressed deep solidarity with "families, the school community of Instituto Sao Jose and all education professionals affected by this incident" in an official statement.
This incident follows similar school violence in Brazil, including a shooting in Ceara state last year that killed two teenagers and a 2022 incident where a student killed one classmate.
