Schools Allowing Pupils to Arrive Late Monday After England Game
Several schools will open registers late or screen replays as parents weigh sleep against attendance for the 1am kickoff, officials said.
Schools across England are permitting pupils to arrive late on Monday following the 1 am World Cup match against Mexico, with several institutions in County Durham allowing students to start up to 10 am without penalty.
England manager Thomas Tuchel urged parents to let children watch the match, stating, "Write an excuse for school and let them watch football," as the 1 am kick-off time complicates attendance.
Three schools under a County Durham multi-academy trust—Greenland Primary School, Burnhope Primary School, and Bloemfontein Primary School—will allow students to arrive by 10 am on Monday without attendance penalties.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson insisted pupils should attend school on time despite the late kick-off, while National Education Union general secretary Daniel Kebede argued schools should not face negative Ofsted judgments for attendance dips.
The decision has proven divisive among parents, with some arguing education must come first, while others view the World Cup as an "important event in our calendar" that creates lasting memories.
