School Bus Driver Fired After Letting Student Rescue a Kitten
Parents say Cynthia Morgan should return after a kitten rescue led to her removal, and a Change.org petition has drawn more than 630 signatures.
- After 10-year-old Alex Thomas retrieved a kitten on Heaps School Road in Pylesville, bus driver Cynthia Morgan was removed from her route this week. Morgan, an 11-year veteran, was dismissed following the incident.
- District Transportation Director Danielle Bedsaul sent an Oct. 5 letter to contractor Cleary Transportation citing 'multiple incidents' involving Morgan. The letter alleged 'concerns regarding inappropriate interactions with students,' prompting her decertification.
- More than 630 people have signed a Change.org petition calling for Morgan's reinstatement as of Thursday. Parent Carolyn Kalambihis, whose children rode Morgan's bus for five years, called the termination 'excessive,' noting the rural road had minimal traffic.
- Kalambihis acknowledged the potential safety risk, stating, 'It's definitely a concern for safety. There is no question that it was a mistake.' Parents also highlighted Morgan's history of buying students school supplies and holiday gifts.
- Harford County Public Schools spokesperson Jillian Lader stated that certification decisions are made after 'careful review of all relevant information' and that 'student safety remains our top priority.' The district cited adherence to COMAR regulations in its process.
