Scarlett Johansson, Sam Rockwell and Tom Waits join Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn
- Netflix and Skydance Animation announced today that director Brad Bird's animated feature Ray Gunn will star Sam Rockwell, Scarlett Johansson, and Tom Waits. The companies unveiled first-look images for the retro-futuristic project.
- Bird developed the mystery sci-fi film for over 30 years, describing it as a blend of classic 1940s detective stories and science fiction. Set in Metropia, a gigantic city in an alternate future as seen from 1939, the film emerged from a decades-long passion project.
- Rockwell plays the private eye Raymond Gunn, while Johansson voices multimedia star Venus Nova and Waits portrays an alien named Eyera. Bird stated, "Animation as a medium is too interesting to limit what kind of stories can be told."
- Produced by Skydance Animation, the film is slated for release on Netflix later this year. It marks the studio's fourth feature, following the May premiere of Swapped.
- To focus on Ray Gunn, Bird stepped down from directing Incredibles 3, which Pixar scheduled for release in June 2028. Elemental director Peter Sohn will now helm the sequel.
