At Long Last, Imran Gets Bail Relief From SC
The Supreme Court cited inconsistencies in prosecution evidence and applied the principle of consistency, granting bail to Imran Khan in eight cases related to May 9 riots.
- On Aug 21, Pakistan's Supreme Court of Pakistan granted bail to Imran Khan, former prime minister and PTI founder, in eight May 9 cases, ordering his release on Rs.100,000 bond with one surety per case.
- Following the May 9 unrest, the May 9, 2023 riots erupted after Imran Khan's arrest and attacks on military installations; his bail pleas were rejected by anti-terrorism courts and the Lahore High Court earlier this year.
- A three-member bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi heard Khan's appeals, with prosecutors citing witness statements and forensic tests while defence stressed belated witnesses and Khan's NAB custody.
- Khan remains jailed due to his conviction in the 190 million Al-Qadir Trust graft case, while Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf hailed the ruling online as `Victory For Imran Khan` and Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar cautioned that bail is procedural.
- The court emphasised that merits are for trial courts and invoked the principle of consistency, noting others similarly placed had received bail, making the ruling a substantial legal victory that may bolster Khan's standing and influence Pakistan's political landscape and PTI.
