SAS Cancels 1,200 Flights in May Due to Fuel Shortages
The airline said it is prioritizing summer holiday travel as jet fuel prices surge after the Strait of Hormuz closure.
- The German airline Lufthansa announced on April 21st it would cancel 20,000 departures through October, while Scandinavia's SAS airline is cancelling nearly 1,200 flights in May.
- Jet fuel costs soared after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz on March 4th, blocking a fifth of the world's oil supplies and triggering the wave of cancellations across Europe.
- SAS head of press Alexandra Lindgren Kaoukji stated the airline is prioritizing summer holiday travel, saying, "Affected customers will be informed directly with clear information and an offer of alternate departures as soon as possible."
- Mathias Milling, head of the secretariat for the Danish Aviation Industry Association, noted that summer cancellations will focus on high-frequency routes, adding, "So your summer vacation is not in question here."
- Sweden's Energy and Business Minister Ebba Busch warned that fuel shortages may persist even if the Strait of Hormuz reopens, stating, "Even if we were to reach a sustainable peace agreement tomorrow, it could take a while before the supply of oil and gas is restored.
