Santander UK’s chief to step down ahead of TSB merger
Mike Regnier will leave after four years leading Santander UK, with the bank serving 14 million active customers and pursuing a £2.65 billion TSB acquisition, the board said.
- On Friday, Santander UK announced Mike Regnier, Chief Executive Officer of Santander UK, will step down by Q1 2026 and the board has started the successor search.
- Having joined from Yorkshire Building Society, Regnier said he wants to pursue other interests and felt now was the right time after four to five years at Santander.
- The deal announced in July involves Santander acquiring TSB for 2.65billion, serving roughly 14 million active customers, 7 million digital customers, 444 branches, and £183.4bn in deposits.
- Ana Botin, Executive Chair of Banco Santander, said the move allows an orderly transition amid fears the TSB brand could disappear and branch closures may follow; Santander UK chair Tom Scholar added strong succession plans expect appointment in the early part of 2026.
- The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approval, and Regnier urged finding a successor now because integration of TSB will take longer than his remaining tenure.
