Sandy Fire in Simi Valley Prompts Mandatory Evacuation Orders

Fire crews battled strong Santa Ana winds as the blaze grew past 180 acres and threatened homes, officials said.

  • On Monday, the Sandy Fire broke out near the 600 block of Sandy Drive in Simi Valley, burning at least 184 acres with no containment line established as of 11:30 a.m., according to Cal Fire.
  • Meteorologist Marina Jurica says gusty northeast Santa Ana winds are driving the flames, expected to peak at 40 miles per hour at 1 p.m. before weakening by 3 p.m.
  • Due to air quality, the Simi Valley Unified School District ordered students to shelter in place at Hillside Middle School, Crestview Elementary School, Mountain View Elementary School, and Hollow Hills Elementary School. All outdoor activities are suspended.
  • Mandatory evacuations for SIMI-32, SIMI-34, and SIMI-35 were issued by the Ventura County Sheriff's Emergency Services, with a temporary evacuation point established at Rancho Santa Susana Community Park on 505 Los Angeles Avenue.
  • Assisting with the response, the Los Angeles Fire Department sent three strike teams, heavy equipment, and a helicopter. Cal Fire said the fire is spreading dangerously fast and threatens structures as well as infrastructure.
