Sandro Tonali suffers NEW injury blow as Newcastle star left out of Italy squad
On Sunday, Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali was withdrawn from the starting XI at Fulham just moments before kick-off after feeling a muscle issue in the warm-up, forcing Joe Willock into the midfield.
Concerns over Tonali's fitness emerged after he suffered a hamstring injury against West Ham seven days earlier, though Head Coach Eddie Howe initially said the player would be available for Fulham.
Newcastle fell to a 2-0 defeat without Tonali in midfield, with goals from Issa Diop and substitute Tom Cairney, while Howe noted the team looked disjointed due to limited selection choices.
Tonali's omission from Italy's June friendlies against Luxembourg and Greece provides Newcastle crucial recovery time, with the midfielder set for a seven-week break before a July 13 return date.
Multiple elite clubs including Arsenal, Manchester United, Real Madrid and PSG have been linked with Tonali this summer, though Newcastle's £86million asking price and CEO David Hopkinson's firm stance suggest the club will only sell on their terms.
