Sandro Tonali suffers NEW injury blow as Newcastle star left out of Italy squad
The Newcastle midfielder pulled a muscle in the warm-up and will miss Italy’s June friendlies, giving Eddie Howe extra recovery time.
On Sunday, midfielder Sandro Tonali was forced to withdraw from Newcastle United's starting XI at Fulham moments before kick-off after feeling a muscle issue in the warm-up, with Joe Willock replacing him in the 3-5-2 formation.
Tonali's withdrawal followed a hamstring injury sustained against West Ham on May 17, though Head Coach Eddie Howe clarified the Fulham injury was unrelated, saying 'It was a different injury' and 'not related to last week but a big blow just before kick off.'
Before the match, Howe said 'Sandro, potentially, will be available. We will look at him again today. We dont think it is anything serious,' but after the 2-0 defeat he told The Gazette 'I think it was a shooting, he felt a muscle, I'm not 100% sure which one.'
Newcastle fell to a 2-0 defeat with goals from Issa Diop and substitute Tom Cairney, leaving Howe frustrated with the team's disjointed performance without Tonali. His omission from Italy's June friendlies provides a seven-week recovery window before his July 13 pre-season return.
Despite the injury setback, transfer speculation has intensified with Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Real Madrid linked to the 26-year-old, though CEO David Hopkinson stated 'If an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms,' signalling no sale without an astronomical offer.
