San Jose Sharks' future appears brighter after 3-player 1st-round haul at NHL draft
Mike Grier kept the No. 2 pick and added three prospects as San Jose continued building around Macklin Celebrini.
On Friday at the KeyBank Center, the San Jose Sharks selected winger Ivar Stenberg second overall, defenseman Keaton Verhoeff at No. 9, and blueliner Ryan Lin after trading with the Philadelphia Flyers.
General Manager Mike Grier prioritized competitive players, trading the 27th, 62nd, and 120th overall picks to the Flyers to acquire Lin, described by Elite Prospects as the draft's most detailed defender.
Director of Amateur Scouting Chris Morehouse praised the haul, noting Stenberg projects as a Calder Trophy candidate while Verhoeff, at 17, was the youngest defenseman in NCAA Division I last season.
These prospects join a core led by Macklin Celebrini, the 2024 first-overall pick, as the Sharks build on a season finishing fifth in the Pacific Division with 86 points.
Stenberg believes he can play in the NHL next season, while Grier indicated the Sharks will likely return Verhoeff to North Dakota for a sophomore season to improve his skating and decision-making.
