Samsung Buys Out General Motors’ Stake in St. Joseph County Battery Plant
Samsung will co-develop prismatic batteries with General Motors and use the plant for energy storage and electric vehicle production.
- On Tuesday, August 11, 2026, Samsung SDI acquired General Motors' 49.99% stake in the SynergyCells electric vehicle battery plant near New Carlisle, Indiana, becoming its first wholly owned battery manufacturing factory in North America.
- Slower-than-Anticipated electric vehicle demand prompted GM to revise its electrification strategy, following similar dissolutions of battery joint ventures by Ford Motor Co. and Stellantis in North America.
- St. Joseph County Council Member Joe Thomas stated, "I'm glad to see the building is not going to stay empty," as the plant is expected to provide around 1,600 jobs upon completion.
- Despite the divestment, GM and Samsung signed a new agreement to co-develop high-energy-density prismatic batteries while pivoting the location toward stationary energy storage system batteries for AI data centers.
- South Bend Regional Chamber President Jeff Rea noted the project faced uncertainty when tax credits changed in Washington, D.C., though the acquisition now provides clarity for the site originally planned as part of a $3.5 billion investment.
