J.J. McCarthy Nearly Leads Miracle Comeback in 34-27 Giants Loss to Saints
Tyler Shough threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as New Orleans ended a three-game skid and forced four turnovers, officials said.
- On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the New York Giants benched starting quarterback Jameis Winston for backup J.J. McCarthy during their game against the New Orleans Saints after Winston threw his second interception early in the fourth quarter.
- The Giants acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings on September 28 to bolster quarterback depth following a season-ending knee injury to starter Jaxson Dart.
- Winston was pulled after throwing for 152 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. McCarthy threw an interception on his first series but later connected with Malik Nabers for a 24-yard touchdown.
- Although the Giants ultimately lost 34-27, McCarthy led a scoring drive featuring a 49-yard pass, nearly rallying the team back from a 34-10 deficit.
- Questions remain regarding McCarthy's ability to avoid turnovers after he threw an interception on his fourth pass attempt. The former 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft continues to face evaluation as the Giants assess long-term quarterback options.
