Sainsbury's set to make major food rule change this month in all stores across UK
The retailer says the scheme will support its goal of adding thousands of tonnes of fibre to UK diets by 2030.
Sainsbury has launched a Full on Fibre labelling scheme across more than 500 products, aiming to add thousands of tonnes of fibre and millions of portions of fruit and vegetables to British diets by 2030.
The initiative addresses concern that only four per cent of British adults consume enough fibre, with average daily intake at 19g significantly below the Government's recommended target of 30g according to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey.
Research found just 52 per cent of shoppers identify fruit as a fibre source, prompting Sainsbury chief executive Simon Roberts to say, "Healthy eating shouldn't feel difficult or complex," highlighting widespread consumer confusion.
Anna Taylor, executive director of The Food Foundation, called the focus on seasonal British produce a "key step," while Sainsbury incorporates high-fibre items into its Aldi Price Match and Nectar Price schemes.
New items including Mediterranean Style Veg Burgers and Spiced Mixed Nuts and Seeds with Apple Granola are being promoted until June 23 to help simplify healthy shopping for families.
