VW Recalls 25 000 Vivos over Handbrake Issues

The fault involves rivet height on the handbrake lever, causing engagement issues; 25,729 cars sold between Feb 2025 and Feb 2026 are affected, Volkswagen confirmed.

  • On Thursday, the National Consumer Commission announced Volkswagen Group Africa's urgent recall of 25,729 Polo Vivo vehicles sold across South Africa, manufactured between February 2025 and February this year.
  • Volkswagen told the NCC that the rivet height on the handbrake lever may be outside specification, which could cause the handbrake to not engage or disengage unexpectedly, posing risks on inclines.
  • Volkswagen advised owners to take affected vehicles to authorised Volkswagen dealerships for free inspection and repairs and to avoid parking on slopes, using first gear or 'P' as precautions.
  • The NCC said it is closely monitoring the recall to ensure full compliance with the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
  • Given the Polo Vivo's popularity, recent VW recalls included 141 Polo and Taigo models last year and about 159 GTI models earlier, increasing public awareness.
