Sabrina Ionescu out for Liberty game against the Fever as back soreness flares up after practice
Rookie guard Pauline Astier has filled in, averaging 11.8 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.7 assists, coach Chris DeMarco said.
Star guard Sabrina Ionescu will miss Saturday's game against the Indiana Fever due to persistent back soreness, sidelining her for the New York Liberty.
After playing only one game this season on May 24 against Dallas, Ionescu has been hampered by injuries; an ankle problem in the preseason caused her to miss five contests.
In Ionescu's place, rookie guard Pauline Astier has started and performed well, averaging 11.8 points as New York concludes its seven-game home stand against Indiana.
Following practice on Friday, Liberty coach Chris DeMarco reported that Ionescu felt soreness, stating, 'She wants to be out there and she's trying her best.'
Taking her recovery day-by-day, Ionescu said, 'See how I feel, taking every day in stride,' after noting she required treatment following her only game appearance.
