Pakistan Initiates Process for Eurobond
The offering will target five- and 10-year papers, with size to be set by investor demand after Pakistan’s rating upgrades.
On Tuesday, Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad announced Pakistan launched the process for a dual-tranche US dollar Eurobond offering five-year and ten-year papers, subject to market conditions.
Successive sovereign credit-rating upgrades and geopolitical developments, including the Makkah Defence Agreement and a favourable decision on the Indus Waters Treaty, prompted the move. These factors signal improved investor confidence in Pakistan.
Pakistan appointed Citi, Deutsche Bank, Emirates NBD Capital, MUFG, and Standard Chartered as joint lead managers and bookrunners. The Financial Adviser plans to conduct investor roadshows in London, Washington, and the Gulf region.
Budget documents for fiscal year 2026-27 target $2 billion in international bonds during the current fiscal year. This follows Pakistan's April 2026 return to capital markets, when it raised $500 million through a three-year Eurobond.
Proceeds from this borrowing will support returning bilateral loan deposits to China or Saudi Arabia, reflecting the nation's goal of "Stability, confidence, global market access," Schehzad remarked.
Eurobonds are devils, as the Conservatives see Chancellor Merz. But now even liberal economists speak out for more common EU bonds – also because the US president weakens the dollar as the leading currency.
