Iran still awaits ‘official’ U.S. response despite Trump’s rebuff of ceasefire offer
Tehran says the plan would reopen the waterway in seven days if Washington lifts sanctions and the naval blockade, Reuters reported.
- On Saturday, President Donald Trump rejected Iran's seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Sunday that Tehran awaits a formal US response through mediators before deciding its next move.
- Iran presented the seven-day roadmap at the UN General Assembly, proposing that the United States lift naval blockades and waive oil sanctions within four to five days before the waterway reopens on day six.
- Trump dismissed the offer, telling reporters, "I reject their proposal" and asserting the US already has "total control" of the strait because Tehran wants a deal since "they're losing so badly" economically.
- US ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker called the offer "half measures" and "illusory deals," while the administration continues "Operation Economic Outcast" to pressure Tehran into halting vessel attacks in the waterway.
- Araghchi wrote on Telegram that Trump "has made many good statements, as well as many contradictory ones," while Tehran insists "only a negotiated solution can get them out of this deadlock.
