Ryanair Flight to UK Diverts 900 Miles to Spain Amid Storm Boelo
The aircraft was held above 20,000 feet before air traffic controllers sent it south to an alternate airport, according to reports.
On Saturday night, Ryanair Flight FR2955 from Dublin to Bristol diverted to Alicante-Elche Airport in southern Spain as Storm Boelo swept across the United Kingdom, leaving passengers roughly 910 miles from their intended destination.
Pilots aborted the landing at Bristol Airport after encountering conditions described as "far from forgiving," forcing the aircraft to hold above 20,000ft before changing course.
The Boeing 737-800 climbed back to 27,000ft before heading south, performing a U-turn to reach Spain; the jet touched down safely on Runway 10 at Alicante at 2.15am on Sunday.
Earlier that day, the aircraft unsuccessfully attempted a route from Alicante to Newquay before diverting to Dublin, adding to the operational difficulties encountered before the final Bristol flight.
As the storm battered the United Kingdom with gusts of up to 84 mph, widespread travel disruptions hit the region, forcing another Ryanair flight from Faro to Edinburgh to divert to Oslo, Norway.
