- The project pairs Reynolds with writers Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson, who worked on FX's Fargo season four and have credits on The Kingdom and Snowfall, represented by WME and Untitled Entertainment.
- The director is Reid, who previously edited Deadpool & Wolverine, which earned $636.7 million domestic, and Shane Reid will make his feature directorial debut on the remake.
- The remake could serve as an ideal A-lister two-hander and might enable a Reynolds–Hugh Jackman reteaming, while Reynolds will produce via his Maximum Effort banner with its Paramount first-look deal.
- The film launched Michael Cimino's career in his feature debut; Cimino later won Best Directing Oscar for The Deer Hunter, and Jeff Bridges earned an Academy Award nomination.
